Working from home has made the dining-table-and-laptop setup a pain in the neck, sometimes literally. An electric standing desk lets you switch between sitting and standing at the touch of a button. Standing isn't magic: the benefit comes from changing position regularly, not from standing all day. Still, many people find they feel better for it, and it's a common New Year purchase.
Most budget and mid-range desks on Amazon UK use similar frames, so the differences that matter are single vs dual motors, 2-leg vs 4-leg frames, height range (especially the minimum if you're shorter) and desktop size and construction. Wobble at full standing height is the most common complaint, so stability gets the most weight in our picks.

FlexiSpot is the standing-desk brand UK reviewers mention most. TechRadar's top picks include FlexiSpot models. This QS2 uses a four-leg, dual-motor frame with 3-stage columns and an 80kg load rating, which is a big part of why owners describe it as sturdy and say it doesn't wobble. It holds around 4.6 stars from more than 400 ratings, with owners praising the quality, smooth quiet movement and value.
The four legs leave less room for drawer units or a wide office chair base at the sides. The 140×70cm top is a 'splice board' (two pieces joined underneath), which is common at this price. A few owners find it slow to rise from sitting to standing. FlexiSpot's pricier E7/E7 Pro, which TechRadar rated its best overall, wasn't listed on Amazon UK when we checked.
What owners and reviewers like
- 4-leg dual-motor frame is very stable
- Smooth, quiet movement
- Memory presets
- Strong owner reviews
Watch-outs
- Split (two-piece) desktop
- Legs at each corner limit under-desk storage
- Some find it slow to change height

Sanodesk's QS2 is a very similar four-leg, dual-motor design that's often a little cheaper than FlexiSpot's. Owners like the size, the solid connectors joining the two-piece top, the quiet motors and the soft start/stop. They also say assembly is straightforward, with mostly clear instructions.
Check the minimum height. The listing says 72cm, but some owners report a minimum of 73cm. For shorter people (roughly under 5'4"), a desk that goes lower, or a footrest, may be more comfortable when sitting.

- Four legs and dual motors for the money
- Quiet, smooth soft start/stop
- Easy assembly
- Good value
Watch-outs
- Minimum height may be too high for shorter users
- Split desktop

If you need room for two or three monitors, a laptop and notes, 180×80cm is a huge step up from 120×60cm. Devoko's desk has 60mm alloy columns, a 70kg load rating and a 71–119cm height range. It's one of the most-reviewed standing desks on Amazon UK (3,500+ ratings, about 4.3 stars). Owners say it looks expensive, is manageable for one person to build and is great value.
The concerns are the ones you'd expect at this price and size. Owners are split on stability, with some reporting wobble when leaning on it at standing height, and a minority say the motor stopped working. Keep the packaging until you're sure it's working well, and check the returns window.

Dual motor and 4 legs = less wobble

Wobble at standing height comes from the frame, not the top. Dual-motor frames lift each leg independently and generally carry more weight more smoothly. Four-leg frames are the most stable but leave less room at the sides. Most two-leg T-frame desks are fine for a laptop and monitor but can sway when you type hard at full height.
Get the height range right
Sitting height matters as much as standing. Your elbows should be at about 90° with your shoulders relaxed. Many budget desks bottom out at 71–74cm, which can be too high for shorter people sitting down. Taller users (over about 6'2") should check the maximum height includes the desktop thickness.
Desktop size and construction
120×60cm suits a laptop plus one monitor, 140×70cm fits two monitors comfortably, and 160cm+ suits multi-screen setups. Many budget desks use 'splice' tops made of two or more pieces joined underneath. That's normal, but a single-piece top looks neater and can be more rigid.
Load and cable management
Check the load rating if you use heavy monitor arms or a desktop PC. Add a cable tray or spine so cables don't snag as the desk moves, and leave slack for the full height range.
Using it well
Alternate between sitting and standing rather than standing for hours. An anti-fatigue mat and supportive shoes help, and memory presets make switching easy.
FAQs
Are cheap standing desks worth it?
Many budget desks share similar frames and work well for light setups. The trade-offs are usually more wobble at full height, split desktops and fewer presets. For two monitors and daily use, a dual-motor 4-leg or premium 2-leg frame is worth paying for.
What size standing desk do I need?
120×60cm for a laptop and monitor, 140×70cm for two monitors, and 160–180cm for multi-screen or gaming setups. Measure your room and chair clearance first.
How tall should a standing desk go?
Look for a range that includes your elbow height both sitting and standing. As a rough guide, about 72cm sitting and 105–120cm standing covers most adults.
